How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Published on

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your indoor space. Because they are so important to a home, they receive a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty quickly, especially with little hands or pets in the home, but lucky for you glass cleaning isn’t that hard. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from inside your home, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors recommends:

  1. Begin by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and cleaning it out will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. Do not use the same cleaning duster that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment along the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

We’ve got a few more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals favor microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
